Directing positive change for Colorado individuals and families
Developing policies that support Coloradans experiencing poverty requires hard work, ingenuity, extensive legal expertise, strong relationships within the community and knowing when to hold the line.
To address inequities pertaining to financial security, food, housing, skills training, child care and health care, we use our experience and legal expertise to work with our partners and develop policy solutions with state legislators. Then, we employ the tools of research, advocacy, coalition-building and communications to build support for these measures to ensure they are adopted and implemented.
At the same time, we confront proposed or existing policies that hinder the advancement of families living on a low income.
A recent example of our success: In 2019, All 13 bills developed or led by CCLP were approved by legislators with bipartisan support and signed into law by Gov. Jared Polis. The measures include House Bill 1223, which helps Coloradans with disabilities apply for financial assistance from the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) programs and Senate Bill 180, which establishes a $750,000 legal defense fund to help Coloradans facing eviction.
