Since its inception more than 35 years ago, the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) has proven to be an essential piece of federal policy to promote work and strengthen families. As the nation’s single largest anti-poverty program, the EITC plays a critical role in the viability of working families. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 expanded eligibility for the EITC, providing an important boost to working families struggling through the economic recession. The credit is responsible for an estimated $577 million in economic output in Colorado and 4,166 jobs.
