While working with our partners to advance new hospital financial assistance laws during the 2021 legislative session, CCLP contracted with the Colorado-based opinion polling and research firm Magellan Strategies to survey Coloradans about their experiences with hospital bills. The study surveyed 441 Colorado residents who had received care in a Colorado hospital in the previous 12 months.
Key findings reveal just how much Coloradans are struggling with the costs of critical health care:
- 71% of respondents without health insurance did not know Colorado hospitals are required to provide financial assistance
- 64% had trouble or were late paying their hospital bills
- 72% of respondents who had trouble paying a hospital bill were sent to a collection agency
